Singapore’s Dolce Tokyo Cafe

Dolce Tokyo serves Italian-Japanese cuisine for its discerning Singaporean market.

During one of my vacations in Singapore, Eden and I were walking around Bugis Junction when we chanced upon this restaurant. Dolce Tokyo’s exterior was well-lit and the interior was nicely decorated; and this tempted us to try the place out. The cafe was also “open” so it was easy to get a glimpse of what the other diners were having. Of course, having a big menu for their desserts didn’t help.

Considered as a cafe, most people wouldn’t think of coming here for lunch or dinner. However, this isn’t the case at all. They offer All-Day Breakfast meals, pastas, and even curries! You can definitely come and eat here at any time of the day or just drop by to have their dessert.

Smoked Salmon Benedict. Poached Egg, Smoked Salmon with Hollandaise Sauce on Toast (SGD 17.00). Eden ordered this one for her dinner. The serving was really big and was enough to fill Eden’s tummy. According to her, the poached egg was creamy, but not entirely under-cooked. Since she didn’t like the beans, I ate it for her. It was also one of those rare occasions when she wasn’t fussy with her greens.

Chicken and Asparagus Pasta with Cream as the base (SGD 16.00). Dolce Tokyo’s pasta dishes are nice because you can choose from tomato, spicy tomato, creamy tomato, creamy, or spicy oglio olio as your base or sauce. Since I’m not good with spicy food and wasn’t keen on tomato, I went with cream. Although it was a bit on the heavy side, I like how the sauce was somewhat smoky in flavor, probably from the truffles. The chicken was also soft while the asparagus was prepared well. By well, I mean there wasn’t any edgy, unpeeled texture.

Double Chocolate Shake (SGD 7.50). Eden went with this Double Chocolate Shake for her drink. Simple advice: you can never go wrong with chocolates.

Matcha Shake with Chocolate Gelato (SGD 9.50). Being the green tea lover that I am, I went with Matcha Shake. To counter the somewhat bitter taste of matcha, I opted for one with an additional chocolate gelato.

Dessert Bento. Upper left going clockwise: Cake of the Day (Matcha), Abekawa with Green Tea Gelato, Ichigo Daifuku and Kuromame, Gyuuhi, and Panna Cotta with Caramel and Marshmallow (SGD 19.9). The matcha cake was simple yet elegant. There really isn’t much to say. Next. abekawa is a rice cake that’s sprinkled with kinako and red bean paste. It’s not sweet and the texture was somewhat dry to say the least. The ichigo daifuku, or strawberry covered in chocolate, is another popular combination. This portion of the bento box comes with the kuromame or sweetened black soy beans. The Gyuuhi tastes like the rice cake sold in Diao Eng Chay so it wasn’t really out-of-this-world. Lastly, the panna cotta was really wiggly and melts perfectly in your mouth. It was somewhat bland by itself so it went really well with the caramel and the marshmallows.

The food was good but pricey, converted to PHP or not. Ordering the bento box was a great way to sample multiple desserts in one order, so you definitely have to try it out as well!
