SM Megamall’s Tuan Tuan

Found in SM Megamall’s newest Mega Fashion Hall, Tuan Tuan offers delicious Chinese food at affordable prices.

The interior’s heavily influenced by a combination of Asian and steampunk design. Although it’s not visible in the picture, the walls are filled with old-school portraits and decors. The table we sat on also had metallic edges instead of the usual boring wooden edge. Intricately-made chandeliers provide the fancy-vibe to the place. There’s also a contemporary-looking restroom inside the restaurant so people don’t have to walk all the way outside. The queue for the restroom can get quite long when the place is packed though!

At the back of the restaurant is a “railed-off” area for accommodating bigger groups or smaller private functions. A garden wallpaper, perfect for emo-like Instagram picture, also adorns the walls. A friend of mine jokingly said that it’s where people plant themselves on the wall and “look as far as possible” before having someone snap their picture.

Tuan Tuan’s menu comes in the form of a newspaper. Aside from the food they offer, you can also find comments on the restaurant left by prominent blogs and websites. Once you’ve decided on your food, you fill-up the order form and submit it to the crew for “review”. If you can’t decide, you can always ask them for recommendations and how to best pair things up.

Since we were already hungry from an afternoon of bonding, we ordered their Crispy Barbecued Pork Snow Buns (P128.00) first. The bun was thinner and more flavorful when compared to Tim Ho Wan’s. However, I still prefer Tim Ho Wan’s filling since the pork was a little on the dry side. Now, if we were to get Tuan Tuna’s buns and Tim Ho Wan’s fillings, that would be great!

We also tried their Crispy Molten Custard Snow Buns (P128.00). This one is a sweeter variation of the snow bun. Personally, I don’t like my sweets hot, dessert or not. The custard snow bun is okay, but I still prefer the salty ones!

Next up is a series of build-your-own noodle soups. You choose the type of noodles, the soup base, and at least 2 toppings. Your order also comes with a free drink (iced tea) and side dishes (optional).

My friends ordered the Tom Yun Soup with bean curd, squid balls and rice vermicelli (I think).

They also ordered Malay Laksa with bean curd, pork balls, and Shanghai thin noodles. Now the only thing I can say is, both were spicy. I’m not exactly a fan of spicy food so I made and ordered my own!

I got myself a Sate Peanut broth with ramen noodles, bean curd and fish fillet. I like how this one was somewhat sweet and savory compared to the previous two.

Their free iced tea is served in a metallic cup and isn’t as sweet as the usual iced tea from other restaurants. As a matter of fact, it could be a little on the bitter side.

Tuan Tuan is located at the 3rd floor of SM Megamall Fashion Hall and is open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm daily. You can also check out their Facebook page here.
